How do we keep from getting sick? Recently I was asked what we can do to stay healthy and avoid getting sick all of the time. I am not a doctor, but I can tell you what I do.

Natural Immunity has more to do with over-all body wellness than you would think. So I will talk about immunity and staying healthy in 3 parts – staying well and strong, avoiding germs, getting well once you have gotten sick.

Staying Well

Contrary to popular belief never getting sick isn’t really a good sign. Your body was meant to be exposed and to overcome little bugs here and there. If your body is busy processing toxins, stress hormones or healing then your body isn’t fighting off unwanted intruders. We need a lot of things to go right to in order to stay in a place where toxins, excess hormones and injury don’t keep the system busy, here are a few things…

  • Clean living – don’t expose yourself to toxins your body is going to have to process. See the clean living article posted 5/1. Add pesticides and overall diet to that, hair dye…all the things 
  • Plenty of sleep – did you know that the 8 hour sleep requirement was based on studies of MEN! I know shocking (JK eyeroll) the recent studies done during the push to study women show that women need closer to 9 or 10 hours of sleep to process the body cleansing and reset that we need. This sleep should cover the hours of both 10pm and 6am.
  • Stress reduction – and I don’t mean take it easy.
  • gentle movement several times a day
  • Fresh air
  • sunlight at first light, mid-day, and sunset doesn’t have to be direct but it does have to be lenses free – no glasses or sunglasses
  • Good relationships, ones where there is genuine care, laughing, and reciprocity
  • Objective – you can call this whatever you want, purpose, focus, a plan, hopes and dreams
  • The right amount of water – not too much and not too little. If you are losing weight, detoxing or sweating a ton the amount will be different.
  • Shower and change clothes after sweating – don’t sit around in your sweat or let it dry on you.

For a moment, Let’s assume all of these things are attainable and have been attained  AND you aren’t interested in living in a cave away from society and cars and all that…

  • Seriously reduce your processed sugar intake. Studies show that 45 minutes after you introduce sugar to the body the immune system essentially shuts down.
  • Handle hard emotions – processes them – don’t sweat the small stuff
  • Pay attention to oral health, brush and floss. Take good care of your gums. Recently it was found that collagen used to brush or wash the mouth actually rebuilds – regenerates gum tissue. Receding gums are not normal or age related, they are a sign.
  • Lymph brush – dry brushing

Avoid Germs

  • WASH YOUR HANDS – yep I had to put that in all caps
  • Mask AND change your mask every hour or two. *wearing a mask protects others from your germs, changing your mask regularly protects you from germs
  • Don’t touch your face with unwashed hands.
  • Don’t share ear pods, straws, flatware, food and drink with anyone you aren’t already kissing
  • Drink hot tea – especially after being out-and-about
  • Don’t use harsh chemical disinfectants on a regular basis. *avoid breading super bugs in your home
  • If you have seen the reports about contaminated water in airplanes (and plenty of other places) you already know – if you can’t be sure the water is safe make sure it’s hot AND use sanitizer.
  • Iodine Nasal Spray after being out or in a plane – anywhere I mask
  • Nasal Oil this is my favorite one. Traditionally it is used daily. I use it often but especially if my sinuses feel dry, if I know I will be out and about or when I am traveling.
